3 Free and Easy Ways To Conserve Water From Home

Conserve Water From the Comfort of Your Own Home

With Earth Day 2021 approaching, it may be time to consider how humans have affected the planet. One of the best and easiest changes is finding ways to save water. Water conservation does not have to be an expensive or time-consuming lifestyle change. It also does not have to entail buying a whole new sewage system or re-routing the bathroom or kitchen. Water conservation takes only a few seconds but can make all the difference.

Turn off the Tapturn off

Everyone knows it’s better to turn the faucet off while brushing our teeth. But sadly, most people still do not do this. When looking for good ways to save water (and money), this is the easiest solution.

The latest research suggests that one person can save a gallon of water every day by implementing this strategy while brushing their teeth. And this number is even higher when turning off the tap during shaving.

Also, if a household benefits from seeing their water conservation process, there is an app to track exactly how many gallons of water this practice saves every day.

bath A Bath Is Better

Many families, especially those children or teens, do not realize how much water is wasted in the shower. In most cases, it is better for the environment to draw a nice hot bath. Typically, a bathtub holds about 35 gallons of water, which may sound like a lot. But many showers (especially those fitted in starter homes or apartments) will use up to five gallons every minute the water is running. That means that showering for longer than seven minutes uses more water than a bath.

One can rarely shower in under seven minutes, so a bath is usually a better option for conservation. However, this is not always practical. There may be adjustments in the schedule that need to be made–especially when there are multiple people in the home who need to shower daily. It may take some effort, but with some scheduling and communication, taking a bath instead of a shower is an easy conservation option.

Check the Pipes

Leaky pipes are a nightmare to any homeowner hoping to save water or money. Most do not notice leaks until mold grows or there is standing water. By the time most leaks are detected, hundreds of gallons of water have already been wasted. Through regular inspections, plumbing technicians can detect and locate potential leaks in the system. Once these leaks are detected, they are usually easy to fix. But if they are allowed to continue, they can waste a considerable amount of water, costing thousands of dollars.
