Garden City is an incorporated village in the town of Hempstead, with many hamlets named after it, yet the hamlets are separate, unincoprated villages to themselves. Founded by multi-millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart in 1869 as a part of Long Island, the village is home to Adelphi University’s main campus. Garden city also boasts the take-off site of Charles Lindbergh’s historic 1927 transaltlantic flight in the Spirit of Saint Louis, which is now the Roosevelt Field shopping center. With just over 22,000 residents as of 2010, Garden City encompasses a total area of 5.3 sqaure miles.
