Franklin Square was originally used as land for grazing, and later became farmland by the first settlers. Purchased in 1643 from local tribes by Robert Fordham and John Carman by way of a treaty, the origin of the name Franklin Square is unclear and now just a matter of speculation. In the mid-1850’s, the population began to grow with the addition of a new Hotel, bring new visitors and immigrants to the area. Steady population growth occured until a sudden surge in population in Long Island reached the village, due mainly to suburbanization into the post-World War II era. With the increasing population in Franklin Square, by 1952 all the farms were gone.
