Oceanside NY was originally known as South Bay until a township was established there in 1674 and named Christian Hook. Officially renamed Oceanville in 1864, the name was again changed for the final time to Ocean Side (2 words) in 1890 as there was already a town named Oceanville in NY. In 1918 the town named was condensed from 2 words to what we now know as Oceanside.
The hamlet of Oceanside is located in the southern part of the town of Hemsptead, in Nassau County with an estimated population of just over 32,000 people as of 2010. As land was originally being developed, oyster sales soon took over as the dominant business in the area with a local business “Mott’s Landing” becoming the favorite place to buy oysters.
